How much does it cost to see a Psychologist?

Standard Fees for Psychological Services:

Our fees are set by the current Psychologists' Association of Alberta (PAA ) "Recommended Fee Schedule", which sets a 50-minute therapy session at $220 (10 minutes at the end of every hour is reserved for file review). Couple/Family therapy sessions are also billed at $220 for each 50-minute session. Note that these fees are effective as of January 1, 2023.

Psychoeducational assessment fees vary depending on the type of assessment required. Please refer to "How much does a Psychoeducational Assessment Cost?", below.

Post-secondary students who have been diagnosed with a disability may be able to apply for government grant money to cover a portion of the cost of a psychoeducational assessment, along with assistance for education and living costs. Contact the Alberta government or click here for more information.

Health Insurance Coverage & Medical Expense Tax Credits

Fees are covered under most individual insurance plans. Check to see your plan's specific details for psychological services that may be reimbursable. If your plan offers coverage for "psychology", "psychotherapy", or "counselling", then you can use the receipt from Alberta Counselling Centre for reimbursement.

If you are not covered under an insurance plan, psychological services are also considered a tax-deductible medical expense and your receipt can be used as an official tax receipt.

Payment Options

All major credit cards are accepted, including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express.

Please note that Alberta Counselling Centre operates on a Zero Balance Policy. This means that clients are billed and pay for services on the day of each session (using the credit card on file), and before subsequent appointments are scheduled.

Cancellation Policy:

Your appointment requires your psychologist to reserve a significant amount of time exclusively for your benefit. Because it is reserved for you, we charge your full fee for missed appointments and appointments that are cancelled with less than 24 hours notice.

Gifted Assessments:

A complete Gifted Assessment costs $1,100 (see also below, for a non-gifted result) and includes:

  1. A 30-minute intake with the parent(s).
  2. One cognitive testing session.
  3. A formal written report that includes both FSIQ (Full Scale Intelligence Quotient) and GAI (the Wechsler General Ability Index).
    Westmount requires both.
  4. A 30-minute feedback meeting.

A gifted assessment is required for an application to Westmount Charter School, and to formally identify gifted learners (Code 80), and qualify for an IPP (Individual Program Plan).

Please note: the cognitive assessment is the first step in the new, revised referral process for GATE placements.

For all gifted testing, should your child not meet gifted criteria, you will be given the opportunity to decline a written report and feedback meeting, and simply pay for the testing and scoring, which is $660.
